Training & Experience

Chef Bill Sell started his restaurant career at the age of 15 as a dishwasher. Moving up through the kitchen ranks he eventually became a sous chef under Executive Chef Andrew Lanichionne, who later became the 52nd Master Chef in the United States.

After leaving the Casino, Chef Sell moved on to study kitchen management at the Sodexho Marriott Corporation in Johnstown, PA. There Chef Sell studied food costs/purchasing, staffing/management of, and labor costs all while managing the production of food into the hotel.

After mastering the art of kitchen management, Chef Sell took an Executive chef position in Hollidaysburg, PA at the U.S. Hotel Restaurant at the age of 24. After establishing a solid kitchen staff, Chef Sell was able to begin development of his personal portfolio.

Talent & Expertise

Experimentation with fundamental skills allowed Chef Sell to begin production of his personal bests. Plates were designed to be appealing to the eye, which in turn only enhanced the benefit of the flavor given. At this time, Chef Sell began to be featured frequently in the newspaper and community sponsored events.

As consumers continued to come back to the U.S. Hotel, Chef Sell’s name and talent became easily recognizable in the food community. When resigning from the U.S. Hotel in 2002, Chef Sell was manager of the kitchen and head chef, addressing all food needs (restaurant, catering, event hall). Provided with more opportunity at The Altoona Hotel, Chef Sell sold his name along with his food. Being managed by multiple entrepreneurs, Chef Sell learned to be flexible in order to meet his employers need, meanwhile creating a name for himself.  In 2010 Chef Bill and his wife Brooke purchased the real estate to open Bold.

A great restaurant located in the heart of downtown Altoona.

This is one of the best places in town for lunch! The Turkey Rueben might just be the greatest thing between two pieces of bread in the history of time.
